Those Black Streaks on Your Roof Aren't Dirt
By Ethan King · September 1, 2026
Those black streaks on your roof aren't dirt — they're a type of blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma. It feeds on the limestone filler inside modern asphalt shingles and spreads fast in our humid North Carolina climate. The streaks look like something you could sweep off, but they're a living colony anchored to the surface of the roof.
What the streaks actually are
Gloeocapsa magma is an airborne alga. It lands on your roof, finds the limestone filler in your shingles, and feeds on it. The dark pigment is a protective shell the algae produces to shield itself from UV light, which is why the streaks look worst on the north-facing slopes — those sides get less direct sun and stay damp longer. Once it takes hold, it spreads down the roof every time it rains. The streaks aren't a stain sitting on top of the shingle; they're growth anchored into it.
Soft wash, not pressure
Here's the part most homeowners get wrong: you can't pressure wash a roof. High pressure strips the granules that protect your shingles, shortens the roof's life, and can void the manufacturer's warranty. The correct method is a low-pressure soft wash. We apply a detergent tuned for asphalt and metal roofs, give it time to dwell and kill the algae at the root, and rinse with low pressure. The chemistry does the work; pressure just knocks the top off the growth so it grows right back.
The insurance angle, honestly
Some insurance carriers now flag dark-streaked roofs at renewal as a maintenance risk. They're not always wrong — the algae holds moisture against the shingle, which can shorten its life over time. But cleaning a roof doesn't guarantee your rate stays flat, and we won't pretend it does. What we will do is document the work — before photos, after photos, and the chemistry used — so you have it for your records and your agent.
